Education

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the federal act that
creates a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least
Restrictive Environment (LRE) for individuals with disabilities. Each state is
required to implement, monitor and enforce this civil rights act. In Indiana,
these regulations are commonly called Article 7. Every parent with a child
entitled to special education services should be familiar with Article 7.

CAST's Mission is to expand learning opportunities for all individuals,
especially those with disabilities, through the research and development of
innovative, technology-based educational resources and strategies.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula
that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for
learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the
curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all.

Suggestions for making the curriculum accessible and more meaningful by
including accommodations, assistive technology and supplementary aid and
services in the IEP by using the principles of UDL.
