| What is a Buddy Walk®? Each year, in celebration of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, communities all across the country participate in the Buddy Walk® to raise awareness of this common genetic condition. In October, the Columbus Area Down Syndrome Support Group, in conjunction with the National Down Syndrome Society, will be hosting their ninth annual Buddy Walk®. The Buddy Walk® was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to promote awareness of Down syndrome and to raise funds for education, research and advocacy. The Buddy Walk® has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to an estimated 275 walks in 2009. Last year over $10.5 million was raised nationwide through the Buddy Walk®. Locally, over $11,000 was raised. The proceeds from the Buddy Walk® are used to provide services and support to families in South Central Indiana. A portion of the funds are forwarded to the National Down Syndrome Society to support their education and advocacy efforts. |
